Thai food is based on blending the five basic flavors of salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and hot. Although most dishes are hot and spicy Thai cooking is carefully balanced to bring out all the different flavors in a dish. Traditionally Thai kitchens have been very simple which has lead to many dishes being prepared quickly with minimal fuss. An easy way to do this is stir frying and some of Thailand’s most famous dishes are prepared this way. A common recipe in any Thai’s diet is Pad Krapow. Most commonly made with chicken or pork stir fried with garlic and basil and served with jasmine rice and a fried egg. And of course who could forget Thailand’s signature dish Pad Thai noodles. Thai food has a variety of colorful curries ranging from mild to extra spicy made with coconut milk. Traditionally “gang” is cooked over low heat for many hours to allow all the flavors to blend. The Thai menu is sure to include many delicious Thai soups to tempt your taste buds. Thailand’s most famous soup by far is Tom Yum Talay. This is an aromatic soup consisting of a sweet yet sour spicy broth with a mix of seafood, mushrooms and a blend of fresh herbs such as lemon grass, kaffir lime, ginger and chilies. For Thais salad is not the traditional vegetable salad with lettuce, cucumbers and carrots you might be thinking of. “Yum” is a variety of different ingredients tossed with a dressing made of fish sauce, lime juice, sugar and chilies. And Thais will yum just about anything from seafood and noodles to crispy pork and salted eggs. On most restaurant menus you will find common salads such as Yum Talay or Yum Woon Sen which is a mix of shrimp and squid usually over a bed of thin rice noodles.
