Food is one of the cornerstones of Italian culture. Italians take great pleasure in sitting at a table and sharing a good meal together. Dinner at an Italian house is sure to be big and loud and full of delicious flavor. This is because to the people of Italy, food and wine are an integral part of their culture and very often, also a part of their own family history. Every Italian will excitedly tell you about their family way to cook a specific dish, using recipes often passed on through generations expressing how important these foods are to them in their every day lives. It’s this passion that makes Italian food so revered and beloved around the world. Countless restaurants and home chefs everywhere try to recreate that authentic Italian flavor that everyone seems to love. Italians are known for their use of herbs in cooking, especially oregano, basil, thyme, parsley, rosemary, and sage. Cheese also plays an important role in Italian cuisine. There are more than 400 types of cheese made in Italy, with Parmesan, mozzarella, and asiago among the best known worldwide. Prosciutto ham, the most popular ingredient of the Italian antipasto (first course) was first made in Parma, a city that also gave its name to Parmesan cheese. Although Italians are known throughout the world for pizza, pasta, and tomato sauce, the national diet of Italy has traditionally differed greatly from region to region. Staple dishes in the north are usually rice and polenta, while pasta is most popular throughout the south. During the last decades of the twentieth century pasta and pizza, traditional southern food, became popular in the north of Italy as well. Whether north or south one common ingredient found through out Italian food is olive oil. If you feel like having a taste of Italy, why not order some Italian food from one of Hangover Samui’s great Italian restaurants. Whether is a cheesy pizza or some spaghetti bolognaise it can be delivered to your home no matter where in Samui you may be.
